County Intermediate Football Champions 2022

Massive congratulations to our Intermediate footballers who became champions of the Intermediate Football grade and bounce straight back up to the Senior ranks following last years disappointment.

Following heavy overnight rain the conditions were heavy underfoot but credit to Askeaton for having the pitch in top order.

Playing with the aid of the breeze in the first half scores were at a premium along with space but nevertheless we had plenty of possession as we worked hard to create. It was 9 minutes in to the half before Evan Sweeney opened our account. Dylan Cronin added a second on 13 and Evan Egan a third on 16. However we somehow managed to gift Drom Broadford a goal on 20minutes and they led right up to injury time in the first half. Right on the stroke of half time we raised our first green flag when Kevin Nolan coverted superbly from the penalty spot to leave the half time score 1-3 a piece.

With the underfoot conditions deteriorating it was to be a big second half required in the breeze, Drom started the second half strongly and opened up a three point lead as the game entered the last quarter. A surging run by Gordon Brown found captain Dylan Cronin in acres of space and he duly obliged with a bullet to the back of the net. Game on again. Points from Evan Egan, Kieran Daly and 2 Dylan Cronin frees put us 4 points up entering the last few minutes. We again gifted Drom Broadford a soft goal to throw the cat amongst the pigeons, but we showed our bottle and dug out another free for captain Dylan to have the final say. The reiteoir blew the final whistle where relief and jubilation were evident.

Fair play to Micheal Lynch, Ciaran McHugh, Brian Hartnett and coach James Fleming for the wonderful job they have done. Dave O Connell and Leonard Durac on kit and stats and Brian Hurley on physio.
