U21 Football County Semi Final Report

January 04, 2024 270 Views

Our U21 Footballers played the semi final against Oola on 22nd Dec at UL all weather pitch. Oola got off to a flying start with 2 early goals and after 15 minutes they led 2-2 to 2 points.

However over the next 15 minutes our team totally dominated Oola and played their best football, cutting through the Oola defense with superb passing movements and scoring 4 goals, 2 by Jim Beary and 1 each by Dylan Lynch and Thomas Fitzgerald.

Half time score was 4-2 to 2-5 (14 to 11) in favour of Na Piarsaigh.

However within 3 minutes of the re start Oola were awarded a penalty which Ben O'Regan got his finger tips to but couldn’t stop. This levelled the match and Oola then pushed on to score 5 points without reply. Oola‘s 4 senior hurling players really drove them on and when they scored their 4th goal it left them 8 points ahead. For most of the rest of the match Oola played with 13 in defensive mode and we found it very hard to get the ball into our full forward line. Oola turned over the ball many times and had some very speedy players who broke from defense quickly and were able to create overlaps to score.

The final result was Oola 4-18, Na Piarsaigh 4-2, which was disappointing in the end.

However there is hope for the future. Our starting team is very young, with 8 under 17, 1 under 18, 3 under 19 and 3 under 20. It will be great if they continue to play football and hurling at the new grades of u18 and u20 in 2024.
