SENIOR HURLERS

Congratulations to Shane O Neill and his charges who are back in another county Senior Hurling Final after a dramatic penalty shoot out on Saturday evening in the Gaelic Grounds.

What an afternoon of drama we had from disallowed goals to missed penalties, the game had the lot.

We started slowly and trailed early on with Doon faster out of the blocks.

Daithi Dempsey settled us down with a well taken point and 2 further points from Peter Casey and Conor Boylan has us all square at three points each on 10 minutes.

Wayne Kearns then added a well worked point and a Ronan Lynch frees had us up to parity at 6 points apiece mid way through the half.

Doon then hit three unanswered to stretch the lead out to 9-6 but Ronan Lynch kept the scoreboard moving with two excellent strikes from dead balls. Vince Harrington added a beauty to make it a one-point game on the stroke of half time.

Then an all-important score coming from a long range side line cut from Ronan which looked to have gone all the way to the net but Adrian Breen appeared to get the slightest of touches past the Doon netminder.

A late Doon reply had the teams all square at the break on a 1-10 to 0-13 scoreline.

Points were traded again at the beginning of the second half and in the 42nd minute there was no disputing the scorer of our second goal when Adrian Breen pounced on a save from the Doon goalie to flash the sliothar to the back of the net.

This gave us impetus and three unanswered points from JJ Carey , Ronan Lynch and Daithi Dempsey stretched our lead to 5points entering the final 15 minutes.

Doon fired back and rattled off three points to put two between us with 10 minutes left.

Ronan free and a Peter Casey stretched us out again but swiftly cancelled out by two for Doon.

JJ Carey looked to have won it for Na Piarsaigh but that man again English levelled to take the game to extra time.

And so, another 20 minutes for these great warriors to battle.

Doon hit the front again but swiftly Peter Casey cancelled that out.

Ronan Lynch again with 2 excellent frees had us a single point in front on the half time in extra time.

In the second period as bodies began to cramp no one was taking a step back.

Doon hit the front with 2 fine points before substitute John Fitzgerald fired us level'.

Peter Casey looked to have won it but in fairness to our opposition they refused to die and fired over the equaliser to send the game to penalties. What drama .

The lottery of the dreaded penalties ensued with our 5 takers in Peter Casey, Kevin Downes, Will Henn, Shane Dowling and Conor Boylan.

Shane Dowling who had missed a match winning penalty in extra time turned the tides and ended up stopping 4 of the Doon shots before it was left to veteran Kevin Downes to seal the victory and yet another County Final appearance.

Final score on the night was Na Piarsaigh 2-23 Doon 0-29. Na Piarsaigh winning 4-3 on penalties

And so to yet another final where this time it is Patrickswell who will be our opponent on Oct 28th

We wish the lads the very best as they prepare for the biggest day in the Limerick GAA calendar.

Team: Shane Dowling, Emmet McEvoy, Mike Casey (capt), Cathall King, Mike Foley, Kevin Downes, Vince Harrington, Wayne Kearns, Daithi Dempsey, Conor Boylan, Ronan Lynch, Keith Dempsey, Adrian Breen, JJ Carey, Peter Casey. Subs used John Fitzgerald

Our senior camogie had their big day yesterday when they faced Adare in the County Senior B Final in Ballybrown.

Trailing by two points at the break , we pushed on and a brilliant goal by Aine O Tiarnaigh had us in front. However it was not to be our day and Adare pulled away to win the crown. Huge credit to the girls who put in a massive effort again this year.

Best on the day were Aine O Tiarnaigh who finished with 1-3 of our 1-5. A spirited performance nonetheless for this young side who will no doubt take great heart from this year's efforts. Final score Adare 1-13 Na Piarsaigh 1-5
